김철유는 ‘불안’이라는 보이지 않는 심리적 감정을 독창적인 입체 윤곽선(cross-contour) 기법으로 형상화한다.
그의 드로잉은 표면의 곡률과 내부 흐름을 섬세한 선으로 포착하며, 밀도, 간격, 두께, 방향의 미묘한 변화를 통해 감정의 떨림과 긴장을 구현한다. 이러한 조형적 질서는 혼돈이 아닌 절제된 감정의 표현이며, 불안을 단순한 혼란이나 파열이 아닌 무의식의 복잡성과 상상력의 조직된 형태로 재해석한다. 반복적이고 수행적인 선 그리기 과정은 작가의 내면과 감각을 캔버스에 전이하는 명상과 같으며, 관객에게는 단순한 시각 경험을 넘어 심리적 공명을 일으키는 감각적 체험을 선사한다.
이를 통해 김철유는 감정과 질서, 충동과 통제가 교차하는 독특한 미학적 공간을 구축하며, 현대미술에서 보이지 않는 내면 세계를 시각화하는 새로운 가능성을 보여준다.
KIM CHEOL YU visualizes the invisible psychological emotion of ‘anxiety’ through his unique cross-contour technique.
His drawings delicately capture the curvature and internal flow of surfaces with fine lines, using subtle variations in density, spacing, thickness, and direction to express the tremors and tensions of emotion. This sculptural order represents a restrained expression of feeling rather than chaos, reinterpreting anxiety not as mere confusion or rupture but as the complex unconsciousness and organized form of imagination. The repetitive and meditative process of drawing lines transfers the artist’s inner sensations onto the canvas, offering viewers a sensory experience that goes beyond simple visual perception to evoke psychological resonance.
Through this, Kim creates a distinctive aesthetic space where emotion and order, impulse and control intersect, revealing new possibilities for visualizing the invisible inner world in contemporary art.
상상 이상의 세계
어릴 적, 나는 스피로그래프를 선물 받았다.
그 작고 단순한 장치가 내게 얼마나 깊은 영향을 줄지는 전혀 알지 못한 채.
스피로그래프는 맞물리는 톱니들로 이루어진 원형의 아날로그 장치였다.
색색의 펜을 끼워 종이 위를 움직이면, 연속적인 곡선들이 겹겹이 얽혀 신비로운 무늬를 그려냈다.
그 기계를 통해 탄생하는 기묘한 형상들은 나를 미지의 세계로 이끌었다.
그곳은 현실을 벗어난, 공상의 공간을 나는 듯한 환각과도 같은 곳이었다.
나는 그 작은 장치를 통해 평범한 시간의 흐름을 건너,
꿈처럼 몽환적인 상상의 세계를 만났다.
거기선 미래 도시가 떠오르고, 기하학적이면서도 살아 움직이는 건축적 형태들이 꿈틀거리며,
알 수 없는 생명체들이 그들만의 세계를 구성하고 있었다.
한 번도 본 적 없는 세계, 오직 상상 속에만 존재하는 그곳을 나는 자유롭게 날아다녔다.
섬세하게 반복되고 교차되는 선들은 형태의 가장자리를 따라 겹쳐지며,
부드러운 색조의 그라데이션처럼 보인다.
기계의 부품을 연상시키는 질서와 규칙 속에서,
선의 무게감과 밀도, 서로 다른 방향으로 중첩된 음영은
또 다른 곡면을 형성하며 유연한 시각적 흐름을 만들어낸다.
물결처럼 진동하는 윤곽선,
규칙적인 직선으로 구성된 입체 구조물,
그 사이를 유기적으로 살아 움직이는 형태들.
그들은 현실에 존재하지 않지만, 상상력 속에서 또렷이 존재한다.
그리고 오늘도, 내일도,
나는 나만의 그 상상 너머의 세계를 날고 있다.
Beyond Imagination
When I was a child, I received a Spirograph as a gift—
not knowing how deeply that small, simple device would shape me.
The Spirograph was a circular analog tool made of interlocking gears.
By inserting colorful pens and guiding them across paper,
it would draw endlessly overlapping curves, forming intricate patterns.
The mysterious shapes it created pulled me into an unknown world—
a place beyond reality, where I drifted in a trance of imagination.
Through that small machine, I crossed the boundaries of ordinary time
and entered a dreamlike world of fantasy.
Futuristic cities emerged,
geometric and architectural forms writhed with life,
and strange new lifeforms inhabited their own secret realms.
It was a world I had never seen before—
a world that existed only in my imagination, and there, I soared freely.
Fine lines overlapped repeatedly, weaving delicate edges
that resembled soft gradients of color.
Their mechanical precision held an order,
yet the varying weights, densities, and shadows of intersecting lines
formed new surfaces, creating a flowing visual rhythm.
Contours rippled like gentle waves,
while rigid architectural volumes built from straight lines
stood in contrast.
Between them, organic forms seemed to move and breathe within the space.
These imagined places and beings,
though they don’t exist on Earth, continue to stir my imagination.
Even now, and again tomorrow,
I find myself flying—
into that world beyond imagination,
my own universe of dreams.
