ARTIST STATEMENT 

‘여백의 미’는 한국 미술을 포함한 동양에서 역사적으로 주요한 특징이 되는 개념이다.

회화에서 그려지지 않은 부분은 단순한 ‘공백’이 아닌, ‘여백’으로 존재한다. 그림 속에 그려진 사물과 더불어, 비어 있는 공간은 감상자의 연상으로 채워지게 된다.

이는 채워지지 않은 부분도 채워진 부분과 동등하게 감상할 수 있는 이해와 존중하는 마음에서 비롯된다. 평면 뿐 아니라 입체에 서도 ‘여백의 미’를 그려내는 작업을 통해, 나는 디자인 오브제만 만드는 것이 아닌, 물체(positive)에 의해 둘러쌓여서 생기는 공간인 ‘네거티브(negative) 스페이스’ 에도 주목한다.

공간에 존재하는 공기, 사람, 환경 그리고 영혼을 초대하여 나의 디자인에 ‘네거티브 스페이스’인 ‘여백’을 채워 줌으로써 작품을 완전하게 만든다. 미국에서 태어났지만, 자아 형성의 과정동안 한국에서 자란 나는 자연스럽게 미니멀하고 간결한 미학을 추구하게 되었다. 최근에는 아트 오브제와 기능적인 제품의 경계를 모호하게 만드는 것을 목표로, 절제미를 가진 흥미로운 형태 연구에 집중해왔다. 가장 본질적이면서도 근원적인 구조의 구현을 위한 형태의 단순화를 추구한다.

불필요한 요소들을 줄이고, 오브제를 ‘하나의 완전체’로 강조하며, 형태의 단순화뿐만 아니라, 제작 과정의 간편화 또한 성취하기 위해 노력한다.

가벼움의 미학, 그와 동반되는 절제 미를 토대로 나의 작품이 ‘완전’하게 존재하기 위해서 색깔과 형태 그리고 재료 쓰임의 타당한 이유를 찾으려 한다.

The aesthetic of emptiness is a Korean traditional aesthetic. In paint- Introductioning, the unpainted portion of the surface is as important as the portion that was painted; it’s about respecting the emptiness as much as the object. Through practicing the beauty of the void, I can respect not only the object itself but also the negative space that object created. The negative space does not signify a deficiency to me. An empty space poetically invites the air, users, surroundings, and the spirit of a space to complete the piece itself. I believe that my own personal background has naturally led me to a minimal and simplified aesthetic. My recent works have focused on reductive forms that blur the line between an art object and a functional product. I am practicing a strict rule in design: to create form by distilling it to its most essential structure and to its most basic function. By eliminating unnecessary factors and highlighting a singular material, I aim to simplify not only a form but fabrication process as well. I pursue ideas of lightness and reduction in my work. Colors, shape, and material must be essential to the piece and complete the work.
